About the role
One definition of every metric. One version of the truth. Join Protein Works as our Analytics Engineer and build the numbers a fast-growing brand runs on.
You will own what happens to data once it lands in our data warehouse, including transformation in Dataform, modelling, the semantic layer, and the reporting the business runs on. This is one of two engineering roles we are hiring into the Business Intelligence team. Our Data Engineer will own the platform and everything that gets data into it, including ingestion, orchestration, infrastructure, security and cost. The two roles share a lot of the same skills and will naturally overlap, but ownership of each part of the platform is clear.
We are rolling out safe, self-serve AI analytics so teams can answer many of their own questions rather than raise a ticket. That only works if the models behind it reflect how the business wants to measure itself, and every metric means one thing.
What you will be doing
Own the transformation layer in Dataform end to end: the models, dependency graph, tests and documentation between raw BigQuery data and everything the business sees.
Build the semantic layer that gives revenue, margin, customer and order one definition, read by every report and every AI tool.
Own our Looker Studio reporting, from executive dashboards to the self-serve datasets our analysts and the wider business build on.
Shape safe, self-serve AI analytics by structuring and documenting models so AI tools answer standard questions reliably, and deciding where the boundaries sit.
Partner with marketing, trading, operations and finance to work out what they really need to measure, then turn it into models that answer it.
Drive data quality with tests and checks that catch problems before they reach a report, and agree contracts and conventions with our Data Engineer.
Ideal Candidate
Proven analytics engineering experience, with production models you've built that other people depend on.
Excellent SQL and hands-on Dataform or dbt (testing and documentation included), ideally on BigQuery, with an eye for cost as well as correctness.
Strong data modelling: you can take a messy source system, shape something the business can use, and explain why you built it that way.
Experience with a semantic layer or shared metric definitions, plus reporting in Looker Studio, Looker or a similar BI tool, all in a Git and CI/CD workflow.
You turn a vague business question into a working model without waiting for a spec, and you explain your thinking clearly to non-technical teams.
You hold a high bar for detail and you're always sharpening how you work, AI tooling included. Python, ecommerce or DTC experience, or Google's marketing stack are a bonus.
Nice to have
Python for tooling, testing or automation
Familiarity with Cloud Run, Cloud Scheduler or infrastructure-as-code
Experience implementing or evaluating self-serve AI analytics tooling

Experience in ecommerce, DTC or retail

About Protein Works
We were founded in 2012 on a clear conviction: the sports nutrition industry had become complacent, and there was a better way to do it. Over a decade later, we are a £50m business with five consecutive years of double-digit growth, a brand new £10m campus in Liverpool, and ambitions that go well beyond where we are today.
We are a brand, a retailer, a manufacturer and a fulfilment operation. All in-house, all under one roof. That breadth is deliberate. It gives our people exposure and influence that most businesses simply cannot offer, and it gives us a platform to scale in a way that few companies in this space can match.
We are growing, investing and hiring with purpose. If you want to join a business with the energy of a challenger and the foundations of a market leader, this is the right moment to do it.
